English Language Specialist Jun Liu, Head of Department of English, College of Humanities, University of Arizona, visited Ho Chi Minh City February 22-25. Dr. Liu conducted workshops at the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization-Regional Training Center (SEAMEO RETRAC) on English teaching methodologies for approximately 120 English teachers. The audience included both members of the HCMC TESOL Association and teachers from schools throughout southern Vietnam. Dr. Liu addressed current trends in language teaching methods; issues in teaching academic writing; and other TESOL issues. Dr. Liu exposed participants to new and effective English teaching approaches and practices. Participants agreed that such methodologies are needed for teachers to motivate students and maximize classroom performance. Dr. Liu also shared his experience as President of International TESOL, 2006-07. His first-hand experience provided insights into how to manage a successful TESOL Association, which is particularly useful at a time that a national VietTESOL is being established.
