In an effort to expand the Consulate General’s film outreach programs, Foreign Service Officer Kelly McCarthy offered a screening of American classic The Grapes of Wrath at the U.S.-Vietnam Studies Corner in Can Tho on Saturday, April 10. A small group composed of students, library staff, and members of the general public watched the movie, which focuses on rural development themes familiar to Can Tho, the hub of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. The use of DVD’s English-language subtitles feature allowed the audience to more easily grasp the complex and sometimes old-fashioned English used by the characters. In addition, McCarthy stopped the film frequently to solicit questions and comments so that the group could have a fuller understanding of the plot, themes, and language.
