The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with Kien Giang Community College and Hau Giang Community College to hold two workshops on “Trafficking in Persons” during May 14-15. About 300 people attended the workshops, including representatives from the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (DOLISA), Department of Education and Training (DOET), Women’s Union, Police Department, the Red Cross and other NGOs, and teachers and students from local colleges. Dr. Robin Haarr, professor of Criminal Justice and Police and currently researching trafficking issues in Southeast Asia, discussed the interrelation among the causes of trafficking, community-based solutions, and a victim-centered approach to returnees. Lively group activities provided participants with the opportunity to identify causes of human trafficking and find preventive measures within their own communities.
