Groundbreaking Seminar Highlights Responsible Business Conduct in Vietnam

On May 31, the U.S. Commercial Service and the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Consulate General teamed up with the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Young Businesspersons Association, and the American Chamber of Commerce in HCMC to host a seminar on business ethics and corporate governance “Adopting Good Corporate Governance and Ethical Business Practices: The Key to Rising Incomes and Profitability,” attracting some 250 HCMC business leaders, academic contacts and media. The seminar addressed corporate conduct, international best practices, Vietnamese law and practices, corporate social responsibility, and how to do business ethically in a challenging environment. Consul General Seth Winnick gave opening remarks, emphasizing the need for business and government to work together in formulating rules that encourage responsible conduct and the rewards business ethics and good corporate governance bring for Vietnam's social and economic development. Guest speakers including Madame Pham Chi Lan, Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Research Commission, championed reform and an adoption of OECD practices. U.S. State Department Strategic Speaker Attorney David Day used visuals to show corruption in Vietnam, provided data showing a relationship between corruption and per capita GDP, and led a role play presenting an ethics challenge for a foreigner conducting business with a Vietnamese distributor.
