With the Presidential Elections nearing, Consul General Kenneth Fairfax gave two talks designed to offer Vietnamese university students background information on this important event. On September 23, he addressed a group at Danang University; on September 26, he spoke at Ho Chi Minh City’s Hong Bang University. Explaining to his audiences that he wanted to provide them with useful historical tools to understand the election news they encountered, Consul General Fairfax discussed the history of elections, the two-stage process of party nomination and the national election, and the roles of political parties, campaigns, the electoral college. After his remarks, students eagerly followed up with questions. The Danang audience was especially interested in the role political parties play, while the HBU students asked about the affect that foreign policy and the economy will have on this year’s elections.
