Henrietta H. Fore, Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance, visited Ho Chi Minh City on July 5. She met with vice chairman Nguyen Thanh Tai of the Ho Chi Minh City’s People Committee, visited the HCMC’s Provincial Aids Committee, toured a methadone clinic, and visited the Saigon Port. Administrator Fore spoke highly of Vietnam’s economic achievements at the meeting with vice chairman Tai and stressed that the US as well as USAID will fulfill its commitments to assisting Vietnam’s economic reforms and expanding assistance to other areas like healthcare, education, environmental protection, government reforms and humanitarian assistance. When touring the methadone clinic, she talked to the medical staff, patients and reporters and affirmed that USAID would continue to assist Vietnam to fight HIV/AIDs. This year, USAID will earmark around US$70 million for Vietnam, $45 million of which has been allotted for programs focusing on fighting HIV/AIDS.
