Dr. Joan Kang Shin Presents “English for Young Learners” for Local Teachers
Dr. Shin showed participants how to teach English chants to young learners
Dr. Joan Kang Shin, professor of language, literacy and culture at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, led two days of dynamic workshops for teachers of English to young learners August 6 and 7. With the cooperation of the HCMC Department of Education and Training (DOET) and SEAMEO-RETRAC, 35 teachers had an opportunity to learn cutting-edge techniques to make learning fun and effective. The participants learned and tried out new teaching methodologies and approaches, including songs, chants, storytelling, and finger-plays. Participants described the program as “fun” and “helpful”, and noted that they plan to use the new techniques in their classrooms. Effort is being made by the HCMC DOET for workshop participants to share what they learned with approximately 600 other primary-school teachers.
