Visa Inquiries

The Information Team of the Consular Section handles all public inquiries regarding both nonimmigrant and immigrant visa information. For contact information and hours of operation, please click here.

Visa Processing Times

The average processing time is 2 business days. If approved for a visa, applicants usually receive their visas the next business day. All applicants should be aware that the time given above is an average, and that the processing time of a specific case can vary based on individual circumstances and other special requirements.

Because of increasing demand for visa appointments and increased processing requirements and times, we advise all applicants to apply well in advance of their anticipated travel dates. For the latest visa appointment wait times, please visit the Department of State website at http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/wait/tempvisitors_wait.php.

Fees and Forms

Before the visa interview, each applicant must show a valid passport and pay the non-refundable application fee of $131 in cash (only US dollars accepted) at the Citibank office located at Sun Wah Tower, Ground floor, 115 Nguyen Hue Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Citibank is open from 8:30 – 11:30 in the morning and 1:00 – 3:30 in the afternoon, Monday through Friday.

In addition to the visa application fee, student (F/M) and exchange visitors (J1) must also pay an extra fee called a SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) fee. As of October 27, 2008, the SEVIS was increased to $200 for new I-20 SEVIS forms for students and to $180 for exchange visitors.  Additional information about SEVIS fee procedures is available on the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (USICE) website at http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/index.htm.

All application forms are provided free of charge from the Consulate or Citibank offices, as well as electronically on the Consulate website. Please note that all applicants must use the electronic version of the DS-156 nonimmigrant visa application form and print out the completed application on a laser-jet printer.  For more information about the forms, please click here.

Legal Rights and Protections for Certain Employment or Education-based Nonimmigrants– Notice: Informational Pamphlet is Now Available!

The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (WWTVPRA) of 2008 was signed into law on December 23, 2008, by the President. The Act makes several changes to nonimmigrant visa classification criteria, visa processing requirements, and the grounds for inadmissibility under INA section 212(a)(2)(H).

The changes under this provision of this law, relate to the legal rights of certain employment or education-based nonimmigrants under Federal immigration, labor, and employment laws. Additionally, this law outlines the information to be provided to certain nonimmigrants about their rights, protections and available resources. When working or studying in the United States temporarily, we want to ensure each nonimmigrant is aware of his/her rights, as well as protections and resources available, To learn more, review the Nonimmigrant Rights, Protections and Resources pamphlet, Online version or Printer double-sided version. Information on this topic is also available to nonimmigrant visa applicants in the employment and education-based visa webpages on this site.
